IIE's Center for International Partnerships invites you to a briefing on the first stage of the International Partnership Landscape Survey (IPLS). Stage 1 gathered responses from 261 higher education institutions across the United States, Canada, and Europe on how they plan, structure, and manage international partnerships.

Among the findings:

  • 96% of institutions say partnerships matter to their leadership.
  • 84% say the landscape has changed in the past ten years.
  • Portfolios are large (57% hold more than 100 partnerships), but only 29% assess their portfolio's overall impact.

This IIENetwork Briefing welcomes IIENetwork members, as well as higher education institutions and international education representatives, to learn directly from the report's authors. The speakers will share how peer institutions approach partnership agreements, how practices compare across regions, and how to apply the findings to your own partnership portfolios. The session will also preview Stage 2, now underway in East Asia and the Pacific.

Authors/Speakers:

  • Sylvia Jons, Director, Center for International Partnerships, IIE (Moderator)
  • Susan Buck Sutton, Fellow, IIE’s Center for International Partnerships
  • Youree Kim, Officer, Research, Evaluation, and Learning, IIE

By the end of the briefing, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe how HEIs in Canada, Europe and the United States set partnership goals, govern agreements and manage their portfolios, using Stage 1 benchmarks such as master partnership lists and institution-wide approval policies.
  • Compare partnership patterns across the three regions, including portfolio size, activity levels, priority partner regions, and leadership commitment.
  • Identify priority areas for strengthening their own partnership work, especially portfolio-level assessment, follow-through after first contact, and multi-functional partnership models.
